In 1907, when this home was built, it was out in the middle of nowhere. An enchanting Mission style home, it is now surrounded by central El Paso and tastefully set back from Trowbridge just west of the North-South Freeway. It is easy simply to drive by and not notice this house, even easier because of the amazing Gustavus Trost designed Will Rogers building that sits diagonally across Trowbridge to the southwest, demanding all of the attention.
The contractor for the Wingo Residence was Ponsford & Sons. It is a Mission style structure, originally a 4-bedroom home. The original owner, Tullius Wingo, was a banker of some reputation in El Paso, most notably an officer at the Rio Grande Valley Bank and Trust (Abdou Building). The house is brick with stucco. The house is oblong in shape, with a large south-facing circular patio. Each end of the building features stark Mission design similar to Henry Trost's 1906 John Nesum Residence -- just substantially larger. This is an amazing looking home.
Currently, the building is occupied by the offices of attorney David Ellis and the Sierra Title company, and is maintained excellently. Next time you drive down Trowbridge, this building is 1/2 block west of the North-South Freeway on the north side --
